SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Five people were taken to hospitals for treatment after a collision between two Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Green Line trolleys — one in service, one stationary and out of service — early today (Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025).
The collision occurred about 12:30 a.m. at the East Somerville station, and resulted in the derailment of one car of each two-car trainset, the Boston Globe reports. The four operators from the two trains were taken to a local hospital, evaluated, and released without being admitted, according to the MBTA. One passenger who reported a neck injury was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. The train was carrying five passengers.
Shuttle buses continue to replace Green Line rail service between North Station and Medfort/Tufs as of 1:30 p.m. ET, according to an MBTA post on X.com. As of 12:45 p.m. ET, the two damaged trolley cars remain at the East Somerville station, WCVB-TV reports.
The National Transportation announced this morning that it was sending a team to investigate the incident. The Federal Transit Administration was also notified. The MBTA is still addressing a series of safety directives issued by the FTA in 2022 [see “Federal directives order MBTA to address safety issues,” Trains News Wire, June 15, 2022].
