FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation will provide up to $74.25 million to Broward County for capital improvements to establish commuter rail service on the the Florida East Coast Railway/Brightline corridor to Fort Lauderdale, Broward County Mayor Michael Udine said this week.
In a Twitter post, Udine provided a copy of a letter from FDOT outlining funding for the project between Fort Lauderdale and Aventura, where it would connect with a commuter service currently under development by Miami-Dade County [see “Digest: Miami-Dade seeks federal funding …,” Trains News Wire, April 7, 2021].
Current plans call for three stations north of Aventura, including one at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. The website The Next Miami reports construction is expected to begin in 2025.
