DENTON, Texas — Glenn Hulcher, founder of multi-faceted railroad contractor Hulcher Services, has died, the company announced.

Hulcher died on Nov. 23 after a battle with cancer.

“Glenn was a pioneer, an innovator and our friend and we will miss him daily, but his legacy will live on through the company and those whom he influenced by his enduring commitment to safety, quality and dependability,” said Frank Given, company president.

Hulcher began the company’s growth in the rail industry in 1963 when, after a chance conversation with a railroad official, he showed equipment from his father’s pipe-laying firm in Illinois could clear a derailment more quickly than railroad crews. He eventually purchased the company from his father and moved it  to Texas in 1985. The company has grown to include more than 650 employees and 30 divisions in the U.S. and Mexico, and along with assisting customers with derailments performs engineering work, track maintenance, disaster response, and environmental work.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, a son, two daughters, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two sisters. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
