NEW YORK — The president of New York City’s chapter of the Transport Workers Union has resigned following allegations of sexual misconduct, the union announced.

In a statement on its website, TWU Local 100 said that Richard Davis cited health reasons for his resignation, but that TWU International President John Samuelsen had suspended Davis following the accusations.

“Our public restraint regarding this matter stems from the potentially serous legal ramifications and privacy concerns for the accuser, rather than any conspiracy theories to keep the truth from you,” the statement says. It also says that the local’s executive committee has voted that Financial Secretary-Treasurer John V. Chiarello will oversee Local 100’s day-to-day basis on an interim basis.

Davis, who began at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority as a bus driver in 1996, was elected president of Local 100 in December 2022. The news site Gothamist reports that an internal report from the union found the allegations were “credible” that Davis pressured a subordinate into having sex, then threatened the woman’s life and employment when she sought to end the relationship.
