LOS ANGELES — South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem has been awarded a $663.7 million contract to build trains for the LA Metro subway system, the company announced Tuesday.
The Korea Economic Daily reports the contract is the company’s largest by dollars in the U.S.
The order calls for 182 HR5000 cars to be delivered in time for the 2028 Olympics and Paralymics, to replace cars in service since 1993. It also includes an option for 50 additional cars. Cars are designed as two-car units, with trains consisting of up to six units.
“Based on the experience and capabilities we have accumulated while carrying out several local projects in the US, we will do our best to deliver electric trains that will satisfy both locals and tourists,” a Hyundai Rotem official told the Economic Daily.
