WENDELL, Mass. — Eight cars of an intermodal train operated by the Berkshire & Eastern Railroad derailed today (Feb. 11), the Greenfield Recorder reports. No injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were involved; a Genesee & Wyoming spokesman told WWLP-TV that the train was carrying a mix of commodities.
Wendell Police Sgt. Steven Gould told the newspaper the westbound train derailed about 3:45 p.m. The derailed train struck a power transformer near the tracks but did not appear to cause “any significant outages.”
Genesee & Wyoming’s Berkshire & Eastern is the operator of the trackage of Pan Am Southern, the joint CSX-Norfolk Southern operation. Wendell is just east of Millers Falls, Mass., where the railroad interchanges with the New England Central.

The sub-headline says 15 cars derail, but the story says eight. Does anybody proof-read these days?
The original news reports said 15; when the railroad figure came in, the story was corrected but the subhead was missed. We will continue to try to strive to do better.
I saw that train when it left Ayer a few hours before! Should be interesting to see how the cleanup is handled now that there is a new rail operator without the old B&M wreck train.
Gee, Jonelle, you and I must be the last two people who even remember the B&M Corporation.
