
LOS ANGELES — With a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, LA Metro marked the formal start of work on the almost $900 million Airport Metro Connector project, which will provide the long-sought direct service for the Metro light rail system to L.A. International Airport.
The new facility connect Metro’s light rail system to L.A. International Airport’s under-construction Automated People Mover project that will circulate to the airport’s terminals. The tation will be the ninth on the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line now being built, and will also have a 16-bay bus plaza, private vehicle drop-off area, Metro customer service center, and commercial space, among other features.
At the ceremony, LA Mayor and Metro board chairman Eric Garcetti said, “The Airport Metro Connector is a historic step toward reimagining how travelers experience our airport — a turning point that will be a source of jobs and economic growth, reduce congestion, and help our airport realize its potential as a world-class gateway to Los Angeles.”
The $898.6 million project is projected to be complete in 2024; the people mover has a target date for completion bv 2023. More information is available at the LA Metro blog.
