NEW YORK — The Long Island Rail Road has announced its first discount ticket developed for passengers using a specific station, announcing the launch of the Far Rockaway Ticket on Aug. 20.
The ticket expands the discounts of the CityTicket, which covers commuter rail travel within the city of New York, to cover the Far Rockaway station, which is within the City of New York but served by trains traveling through Nassau County. It will be priced the same as the CityTicket: $7 for peak travel and $5 for off-peak.
The ticket will be sold only at the Far Rockaway station, and is only good on day of purchase; the discount is available for same-day returns by purchasing a round-trip ticket before departing. Purchase via the TrainTime app will require users to share their location to confirm they are at or near the station.
“Far Rockaway riders were among the winners from Grand Central Madison, with 13% more daily LIRR train service,” MTA CEO Janno Lieber said in a press release. “Now they get another big win, with a special discount ticket made just for them. This has been a long time coming – and it’s made possible by some high-tech engineering by the MTA staff. But it wouldn’t have happened without the passion of our elected partners and transit advocates. Their advocacy had a huge impact.”
Said Catherine Rinaldi, LIRR interim president and Metro-North president, “we are thrilled that our Far Rockaway customers will now be able to travel on LIRR for only $7 during peak hours. And this September, we will be adding direct service for Far Rockaway customers to Atlantic Terminal, as we continue to improve service for our customers in Southeast Queens.”
Now wait a minute. LIRR had a special fare (a token) from NY Penn to the 1964-1965 NY Worlds Fair at Flushing Meadow, Queens. I would be surprised if they didn’t have a special fare to the 1939-1940 NYWF at the same site.
