BOSTON — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s extended schedule for its current Blue Line track work is having a ripple effect on upcoming plans for the Red Line.
The planned shutdown of the Red Line between Park Street and the JFK/UMass stations will now be held May 2-10, beginning one day later than originally planned. Additionally, service will be suspended evenings, starting at about 8:30 p.m., between the Park Street and Ashmont stations. The changes are to accommodate the extended schedule for work on the Blue Line, which was originally slated to end today (Sunday, April 28) but will now run through Tuesday, April 30 [see “MBTA extends current Blue Line maintenance closure,” Trains News Wire, April 26, 2024].
Details on the shuttle buses replacing Red Line service are available here.
The Red Line work is part of the ongoing Track Improvement Program to address longstanding speed restrictions across the MBTA rapid transit system. Currently, the Red Line has 54 restrictions, covering 8.3 miles; 10 of those are between the Park Street and JFK/UMass stations, according to the MBTA’s speed restriction dashboard.
