NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Metro-North commuter rail service on the New Canaan branch was shut down was shut down much of the day Tuesday after a train crashed through an end-of-track bumping post during the morning rush, injuring two crew members.
The accident occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. at the New Canaan station, the Stamford Advocate reports. The train’s engineer and conductor — the only people aboard — were taken to a hospital, but neither was seriously injured, according to Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi, who held a brief press conference at the scene. Rinaldi said the cause was under investigation and the estimated damage was still to be determined.
The train went about 20 feet past the end of track, the New Canaan Fire Department estimated, pushing past the bumper and through a fence.
Service on the branch resumed with the scheduled 4:39 p.m. train from Stamford.
