TORONTO — Metrolinx, the Ontario transit agency which oversees GO Transit commuter trains, has abandoned plans to build a facility for midday servicing of commuter trains in Toronto’s Don Valley, a plan opposed by residents concerned about potential damage to the environment and nearby parkland.
The Toronto Globe and Mail reports the Metrolinx proposal would have revived a rail spur idled since 2007, and said there was no viable alternative for the proposed layover facility. But in a posting on its website, it now says it has found a new location in a light industrial area on its Richmond Hill Line.
The new site meets flood requirements “and has less community and environmental impacts,” according to the Metrolinx posting. “Moving forward, engagement with Indigenous Nations and stakeholders about feasibility and due diligence work will continue to be carried out on the new location to finalize design, property requirements, schedule and operations for the On-Corridor Works Project.”
I thought the greenies advocate trains for their positive impact on the environment.
This kind of name-calling serves no useful purpose in a debate.
