NEW YORK — The Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad are introducing a new weekend discount program for those with monthly tickets as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s effort to encourage more public transit ridership in conjunction with the start of Manhattan’s congestion pricing program.

The “Winter Weekend” program allows passholders to travel anywhere on their respective railroads, regardless of the stations printed on the ticket, and to bring along up to two additional riders for only $1 per person each way. It begins Saturday, Jan. 4, the day before congestion pricing tolls begin. The program will not be cross-honored, meaning Metro-North customers cannot use their passes to ride on the LIRR and vice versa.

“Monthly Metro-North riders know that the railroad is the most reliable, fastest and safest way to travel,” Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi said in a press release. “Whether it’s a winter excursion upstate or a trip into the iconic Grand Central, we’ve made your experience even more affordable with steep discounts for family and friends.”

The $1 tickets will be available on the MTA’s TrainTime app under Family Fares, or on board trains without an additional charge. The program is expected to run through the end of March.
