Yellow locomotives on freight train
SD70ACe No. 8620 displays Union Pacific’s new paint scheme on July 27, 2022. James Hickey

A second example of Union Pacific’s new paint scheme, the first on an EMD locomotive, is now roaming the railroad. Photographer James Hickey captured SD70ACe No. 8620 leading manifest MNPRO-26 at Buffalo Bend/Point of Rocks, Neb., near the town of Sidney, on July 27, 2022. The new standard paint scheme features a larger UP shield and smaller American flag on the nose, and the return of “Union Pacific” lettering on the carbody [see “Union Pacific redesigns locomotive paint scheme,” Trains News Wire, July 25, 2022]

  1. Yes I understand turbochargers are part of the exhaust . I was just saying I don’t like seeing the flag burnt on so many units it looks bad . I thought it was good idea moving it. Just a personal opinion.

    1. It’s not the exhaust that causes the problem but overheating or failed Turbochargers that “scald” the hood and the Flag decal. Maybe they could leave the wings and put a smaller flag under the words “Union Pacific” on the side. Or what the hell, lets just go to a Script Union Pacific like the last Southern Pacific units had. That’s a nice look…

Of course the best action is just to leave things alone. I’m sure this is a cost cutting move by eliminating the large flag decals on the sides.

  2. Just saw UP s new paint job on the Rochelle railroad park live cam. Up 8667 at 3:26 EDST July 29 th

  3. Still like the large American Flag on the locomotives. Maybe the UP should bring back Sam Elliot and his commercials.

    1. Agreed…This is just a bigger version of the shield that dominated in the 70’s. “The Wings, Part duex” were a welcome retrieval of some beloved UPRR History from the 40’s, 50’s and parts of the 60’s. And class up the trains a lot more than just the shield.

  4. Just a couple of observations: Personally, I enjoy seeing the ‘larger’ version of the American Flag on the side of the body of the engine ( As a former vet.(It still is exciting to me) … I hope they(UPRR) never changes their distinctive colors Armor Yellow and gray trim… They are so well known to the public, and rail fan communities…. Long a part of their ‘Brand’…. But their ‘ special’ paint schemes, as well sure put a spark in a train watcher’s heart! Once again, the paint schemes are historical, and very well liked…Why mess with success….

  5. Looks like the shield and logo are located at the back on the right side of this locomotive. The 5395, a GE locomotive, had them placed behind the cab.
