ALDERSHOT, Ontario — So spotless you can imagine the smell of fresh paint, a half-dozen freshly rebuilt Wabtec AC44C6M locomotives bound for the Quebec North Shore & Labrador pass through Aldershot, Ont., today (Dec. 21, 2021) on Canadian National train No. 422 today. The units, rebuilt from BNSF C44-9s, will operate on the remote 257-mile common-carrier railroad operating between Sept-Iles, Quebec — some 375 miles northeast of Quebec City — and Labrador City and Emeril Junction, Labrador. The railroad is owned by the Iron Ore Co. of Canada.

  1. So I am curious if the covers over the horns and radiators are to protect against snow or ore falling out of the loadout?

  2. Interesting how all the other Class 1 Railroads are rebuilding their older engines while BNSF returns their Dash 9s back to the leaser. I guess the rebuilds didn’t work to well for BNSF.

    1. BNSF has a very pervasive attitude toward locomotives: they have a working life of X years and that’s it. They do not believe rebuilding to be worth the cost. That’s one piece of ATSF culture that did not survive the merger.

  3. that’s funny i didn’t know that burlington northern santa fe was selling their Dash 9’s to different owners

    1. They have had a number of them going on lease return over the last year or so, these may fit that mold.
