A pair of NJ Transit’s Arrow III electric multiple-unit are now wearing the logos of Penn Central and the New Jersey Department of Transportation as part of the agency’s heritage fleet. The new look reflects the design worn by the original Arrow I coaches upon their delivery in the 1960s. The cars are shown in service on Northeast Corridor train No. 3817 between New York and Trenton, N.J. Cars Nos. 1502 and 1502 are a married pair built by GE in 1977 and rebuilt by ABB in the mid-1990s.
NJ Transit had previously added the herald of Delaware, Lackawanna & Western to Arrow III car no. 1319 as part of its heritage fleet, launched as part of its 40th anniversary in 2023. The fleet also includes four diesels and three electric or dual-power locomotives. Before these cars, the previous addition to that fleet had been GP40PH-2B No. 4028, painted for Conrail [see “News photo: NJ Transit’s newest …,” Trains News Wire, Oct. 6, 2024]. Six coaches honoring predecessor operators were also released in 2019 [see “NJ Transit unveils six heritage commuter cars,” News Wire, July 17, 2019].
