RALEIGH, N.C. — R.J. Corman has launched operation today (Monday, Dec. 19) of the Raleigh & Fayetteville Railroad, a 63-mile route between its two namesake cities in North Carolina. The railroad’s first train, led by GP38-2 No. 7710, is shown heading south from Raleigh to Fuquay-Varina, N.C.
R.J. Corman announced in November it was buying the 43-mile segment between Fuquay-Varina and Fayetteville, N.C., while leasing the 20 miles between Fuquay-Varina and Raleigh [see “R.J. Corman buying North Carolina branch line,” Trains News Wire, Nov. 15, 2022]. The route is part of the original Norfolk Southern Railway, which became part of the Southern Railway in 1974 and ended up in the current version of NS.
