Amtrak logoWASHINGTON — A criminal investigation is underway of two Amtrak employees fired for accepting gifts from a construction contractor who received a $58 million contract, the New York Post reports.

The gifts involved included three trips to Philadelphia, and drinks and entertainment at a strip club for a management official, and clothing and a furnace for his church for an inspector, according to a memo earlier this year from Amtrak’s Office of Inspector General.

The newspaper learned of the investigation when it filed a records request for more information, which was denied. The notice denying the request said the request involved records that are “part of an open and pending criminal investigation,” and that their release “could jeopardize the proceedings by more fully revealing the scope and nature of the government’s case.”

  1. These are obviously not train service employees; look at the nature of the gifts. These are definitely higher-up, maybe even corporate. Names and titles should definitely be revealed!

  2. When I read the headline, I thought of tips to dining car and sleeping car attendants. I said “Whoa!”
    I was wrong.
