NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit, the Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation, and the International Association of Public Transportation, or UITP, on Thursday announced a partnership to establish UITP’s first North American Regional Training Center at Rutgers.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said state residents “will reap massive benefits” from the partnership.
“By hosting the first Regional Training Center on the continent, New Jersey will earn worldwide recognition as a North American transportation hub,” Murphy said in a press release. “Just as importantly, the establishment of the training center emphasizes our ongoing commitment to invest in the growth and development of our critical public transportation workforce.”
The facility at Rutgers will join UITP training centers in France, Germany, Spain, China, Turkey, Chile, and South Africa. Their training includes establishment of uniform standards and best practices for sustainable transportation. NJ Transit has committed to sponsor four training programs annually, providing guest speakers when possible, and leveraging its experience in the delivery of public transportation. The Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation will coordinate with UITP and NJ Transit to provide logistics and administration support, marketing of courses, and hosting the training sessions.
“This North American Regional Training Center serves as an opportunity to share industry knowledge on a national scale and develop the next generation of transit leaders,” said Dr. Ali Maher, director of the Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation. “Rutgers CAIT is excited to leverage its extensive workforce development and technology transfer programs in support of this Regional Training Center and in partnership with NJ Transit and UITP.”
Courses planned for 2023 are Public Transportation Fundamentals for North America, July 10-12; Electric Buses: Fleet & Infrastructure Planning, Operations, and Maintenance for North America, Sept. 27-29; Rail Operations and Maintenance for North America, Oct. 2-4; and Ticketing and Fare Management for North America, Nov. 6-8.
