NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit will spend $19 million on upgrades to positive train control, keeping its system current with federal regulations and changes made by railroads used by the commuter operators’ trains.
NJ.com reports the NJ Transit board approved the spending on June 14. It comes in the form of an amendment to an existing contract with Parsons Transportation Group to make five changes to the existing system. Some changes ensure NJ Transit and Amtrak PTC systems remain compatible; another provides redundancy on lines NJ Transit operates for Metro-North. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority will reimburse those costs.
“People think it’s one and done and that we’re finished with PTC costs,” Kevin Corbett, NJ Transit CEO, told NJ.com. “We’ll see them continue.”
As with any new electronic system made today there will be ongoing updates. So railroads will be paying for hardware or
software updates.
