WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — No injuries were reported when a Utah Transit Authority TRAX light rail train derailed Sunday at the Decker Lake station in West Valley City, disrupting operations for the remainder of the day.
UTA first reported an issue on the Green Line via its X feed at 2:06 p.m., saying there would be significant delays “due to severe mechanical issues.” It later updated the report to indicate there had been a derailment.
KUTV reports 16 people were onboard the southbound Green Line train. A UTA spokesman said the last car of the four-car train derailed after rounding a curve, then struck a power pole, causing “substantial damage.” The agency was reviewing video to help determine the cause of the derailment.
A bus bridge was set up around the incident which was expected to remain in operation for the remainder of Sunday; KSL-TV reports the agency said it hoped to have service restored today (Monday, May 13), but as of 5:07 a.m. local time, the bus bridge was still in place.
UTA’s TRAX system includes three lines covering 42.5 miles and 50 stations. Sunday’s incident occurred at the next-to-last station on the southern end of the 15-mile, 19 station Green Line, which has its northern end at Salt Lake City International Airport.
