HARRISBURG, Pa. — Norfolk Southern has paid $1 million to two areas in Pennsylvania as part of its efforts to address the impact of the East Palestine derailment and toxic chemical release.
The Beaver County Times reports the office of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Darlington Township will receive $660,000 and Lawrence County will receive $340,000 because of their proximity to the accident site. The funds are for continued community relief.
Darlington Township is due east of East Palestine; its western boundary is at the Pennsylvania-Ohio state line, less than a mile from the derailment site. Lawrence County is also along the state line, and is just north of Darlington Township.
“This critical funding will help Darlington Township and Lawrence County build back better than before,” Shapiro said in a statement, “and my administration will continue to hold Norfolk Southern accountable for any and all impacts on our Commonwealth.”
In Pennsylvania, a Township is a local subdivison of a County. Darlington Twp. is part of Beaver County and Lawrence County is the next County to the North. Both Darlington Twp. and Beaver County are on the PA-Ohio border and East Palestine Ohio is due West of Darlington Twp.
As to paying $$$, prevailing winds blow West to East and the derailment was just to the West.
As to “build back better,” I don’t know of anything that got knocked down in Pa., but it does make a nice buzz phrase. Just don’t think.

It’s called a “shakedown”. Corporations are better than taxpayers.
Build back better? The accident was some distance away, is there groundwater, indoor air quality (IAQ) data that is not being shared? What is the bases for the compensation?
