ATLANTA — Norfolk Southern will serve a new 1,100-acre economic “megasite” for manufacturing announced Thursday by the state of Georgia and the Development Authority of Peach County.

The Middle Georgia Megasite, located near the city of Fort Valley and close to the geographic center of the state, is less than 5 hours by train from the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, about 3 hours from Savannah by truck, and about 90 minutes from Hartsfield-Jsckson Atlanta International Airport. It is on State Route 96 and less than 6 miles from Interstate 75.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the state and development authority purchased four parcels of land for the site for about $18.6 million and is being pitched as suitable for an electric vehicle plant, although other industries are possible. In the last seven months, Rivian and Hyundai Motor Group have announced plans for electric vehicle plants in the state.

“Even after announcing the two largest projects in the state’s history,” Gov. Brian Kemp said, referring to those plants, in a press release, “we remain focused on attracting key industries and investment by providing the project sites companies need.”

The development agency has launched a website with details about the location.

  1. Rivian factory site. Battery cell production next door, but LG is just up the road, but doesn’t have rail service.

This is to duplicate what Ford is doing in Tennessee.
