UP6944
Norfolk Southern
ALTOONA, Pa. – Norfolk Southern has rolled former Union Pacific DDA40X No. 6944 out of its Altoona paint shop Friday. NS performed the work under agreement with the St. Louis Museum of Transportation, the locomotive’s owner.

The locomotive left its Missouri home in July 2014.

The twin-engine, 6,600 horsepower Electro-Motive Division locomotives were used across the UP system between 1969 and 1984. Thirteen of the original 47 locomotives were donated for public display in various parks and museums.

UP No. 6936 is the last remaining DDA40X in operation today, used in special excursion service hosted by the Class I railroad.

  1. @ Scot Perry: NS's Altoona shop is a major rebuild and painting facility. It often does contract work for "foreign" roads and other clients, like the St. Louis Museum of Transportation in this case. I don't know if NS plans to use this locomotive, but I seriously doubt it.

  2. Some paint sure makes a big difference. The dd40 at Portola, CA could use a little paint also. I guess the storing out side is hard on the paint job.

  3. The UP 6925 in Chamberlain, SD, is neither in a museum or park. It is on a DSRC side track and has been used as a parts source for years.

  4. That's the best looking front end of a diesel locomotive since the Bulldog. I'm glad there are still a few of them around.

  5. Love the NS style numberboards. Should have rebuilt it with twin 710-12ECOs; DDA33ECOX

  6. Mr Solberg. 6900 series locomotives for a while were regular visitors to Oakland on the Western Pacific before the UP merger.

  7. I wonder did the Centennial travel on other lines when they were in regular service like the Southern, or Santa Fe?
