WASHINGTON — The National Transportation Safety Board has released its annual report to Congress for 2022, which outlines the board’s work during the calendar year, as well as providing an overview of its structure and mission.

Board chair Jennifer Homendy, in her message accompanying the report, notes that the board issued 1,864 investigation reports during the year, and in the process reduced its backlog of aviation investigations over two years old from 445 in February to 45. Aviation reports are by far the largest portion of the board’s work, accounting for 1,808 reports in 2022.

The board’s Office of railroad, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Investigatons issued 15 reports in 2022; of these, three involved safety issues that led the board to issue safety recommendations. The report mentions 10 significant railroad investigations that were ongoing as of the end of 2022; two of those have since been completed.

The report also includes the NTSB’s Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements; worker safety is the one rail topic on that list [see “Digest: NTSB includes rail worker safety …,” Trains News Wire, April 7, 2021]

  1. Its good they are all caught up. The 2023 report will be a doozy with what the railroads did this year in the name of capturing Wall Street and the almighty dollar for investors who don’t basically give a crap as long as they get their dividends…
