TORONTO — The government of Ontario will launch a program integrating fares on all transit systems in the Toronto area later this month, meaning transit users will essentially pay one fare no matter how many transfers they make.

The One Fare program will include GO Transit, the Toronto Transit Commission, and several other agencies, with provincial transportation agency Metrolinx reimbursing local operations for lost revenue, the CBC reports. The province estimates it will save the region’s transit users about $1,600 per year and encourage some 8 million additional transit trips annually.

The provincial government has set aside C$67 million over two years for the initial phase of the program, which builds on an earlier program which included GO Transit and local transit services, but not the TTC.

Provincial Premier Doug Ford called the program “a game changer for transit riders” at a Monday press conference, saying, “It will provide people with more transit options and more convenience.”
