Pennsylvania approves $26 million in funding for freight rail projects

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission has approved $26 million in state funding for 24 freight rail infrastructure projects — receiving amounts ranging from $119,000 to $3 million — under the Department of Transportation’s Rail Transportation Assistance Program and Rail Freight Assistance Program.

“These investments in Pennsylvania’s rail system create jobs, support efficient freight travel and help keep the business community connected to the global economy,” Gov. Tom Wolf said in announcing the commission’s approval.

The projects involved:

— $3 million to the R.J. Corman Railroad in Cambria, Clearfield, and Clinton counties to rehabilitate approximately 24 miles of track with tie replacement and track surfacing.

— $3 million in Union County to Country View Family Farms to construct a 110-car capacity loop track and unloading equipment to provide new rail service to the feed mill.

— $2.6 million to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad in Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, and McKean counties to rehabilitate approximately 20 miles of track with new ties and upgrade radio control switches.

— $1.9 million to Pine Creek Seed Holdings in Clinton County to construct approximately a 1,000 foot siding to provide new rail access.

— $1.6 million in Allegheny County to the Allegheny Valley Railroad to construct new track to an engine house and rehabilitate tracks in Glenwood Yard.

— $1.4 million to the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad in Cameron County to rehabilitate approximately 23 miles of track with tie replacement and track surfacing.

— $1.4 million to Cleveland-Cliffs Plate: in Chester County to rehabilitate yard tracks and turnouts at the Melt Shop facility.

— $1.3 million to Franklin Storage in Franklin County to construct a 1,100-foot siding and unloading equipment to expand rail capacity.

— $1.3 million to the York Railway in York County to rehabilitate tracks in the Lincoln Yard, including 250 feet of new connecting track.

— $1.1 million in Allegheny County to Allegheny Raw Materials to reconstruct a rail siding with a rail scale to serve a metal recycling facility.

— $1.1 million to the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad in Lackawanna and Monroe counties to rehabilitate 3 bridges and a culvert on the Carbondale line.

— $955,000 to the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority in Centre County to rehabilitate track and re-align a wye near Bellefonte Yard and replace a switch on the main line.

— $728,000 in Allegheny County to Mulach Steel’s Chapman Properties to rehabilitate multiple areas of track within the Leetsdale Industrial Park.

— $700,000 to the Pittsburgh & Ohio Central Railroad in Alleghegy and Washington counties to rehabilitate approximately 4.5 miles of track by replacing rails and ties and track surfacing.

— $690,000 to the R.J. Corman Railroad Lehigh Line in Bradford County to rehabilitate over 2 miles of track with tie replacement, switch replacement, and track surfacing.

— $613,000 to Shale Rail in Bradford County to rehabilitate approximately 2,000 feet of track with tie replacement, rail replacement, and track surfacing.

— $559,000 to South Avis Realty in Clinton County to rehabilitate yard tracks and raise a section of track to improve transloading.

$554,000 to Refined Plastics in Berks County to rehabilitate approximately 2,000 feet of track and construct 500 feet of track to a transload facility.

— $524,000 to the Redevelopment Authority of Luzerne County in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties to rehabilitate approximately 2.5 miles of track by replacing ties, replacing a switch, and improving a grade crossing.

— $509,000 to IRG Erie in Erie County to construct a rail siding to a new plastic recycling plant.

— $270,000 to the West Erie Short Line in Erie County to rehabilitate approximately 1 mile of track including tie replacement and drainage improvements.

— $202,000 to Penn Recycling in Lycoming County to rehabilitate a rail siding and extend it by 300 feet to improve rail car capacity.

— $172,000 to Kasgro Rail Corp. in Lawrence County to construct a section of track to connect adjacent tracks.

— $119,000 to Integrity Commercial Investments in Mifflin County to rehabilitate and re-align tracks to improve rail and truck access.
