PORTLAND, Ore. — Light rail service to Portland International Airport will shut down for four months beginning today (Sunday, June 18) while the airport’s station is rebuilt and a second track on the MAX Red Line is added in the area.

KGW-TV reports the closure is scheduled to last through Oct. 21, according to transit agency TriMet.

Three other stations — Parkrose/Sumner, Mt. Hood, and Cascades — will also be shut down as part of the project. A shuttle bus operating on approximately 15-minute intervals will connect those stations to the Gateway Transit Center, where connections are available to the rest of the Red Line as well as the Blue and Green lines.

The work in the airport area is part of a $215 million project that also will extend the Red Line on its west end in the Beaverton-Hillsboro area. That cost, which includes about $100 million in federal funding, also covers four additional light rail trainsets for the expanded service.

  1. It would appear that red line trains should proceed blue line trains to keep blue line less crowded.
