PORTLAND, Ore. — The Gateway Transit Center, a hub for the MAX light rail system’s Red, Blue, and Green lines in eastern Portland, will be closed to rail service Jan. 14 to Feb. 25 of next year to allow for construction, transit agency TriMet has announced.
The resulting service disruption will include a suspension of service on the Red Line — the route serving Portland’s airport — for the duration of the Transit Center project. The Transit Center will continue to be served by its seven scheduled bus lines, as well as by shuttle buses replacing light rail operations. Shuttle buses will replace the Red Line between the Transit Center and the airport; connect the Transit Center to the Green Line at the SE Main station; and provide a bus bridge between the two sections of the Blue Line. See this short video for more details.
The work at the Transit Center will conclude double tracking of the Red Line, and involves new bridges and completion of a new station for inbound trains heading toward the City Center.
TriMet said it is encouraging riders to find alternative forms of transportation during the project, and that its complexity may require riders to use more than one shuttle bus to make connections.
