OTTAWA, Ontario — Canadian National, Genesee & Wyoming Canada, Metrolinx, and VIA Rail Canada are recipients of the Railway Association of Canada’s 2024 Safety Awards, which honor innovations and proactive measures by the nation’s railways to maintain and improve safety.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do,” Marc Brazeau, president and CEO of the Railway Association of Canada, said in a press release. “Canadian railroaders work tirelessly to ensure that our railways remain among the safest in the world. Congratulations to this year’s winners! They have demonstrated exceptional leadership and ingenuity in advancing safety across the industry, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.”
The honorees include:
— Canadian National for its Slack Simulator, which simulates in-train forces to provide conductors with realistic training.
— Genesee & Wyoming Canada for its fatigue self-assessment app, which allows employees to assess their duty readiness based on duty and rest period rules, and notifies employees and supervisors if rest requirements are not met.
— Metrolinx, the Ontario transit agency, for its e-bike strategy banning uncertified e-bikes from being transported on trains to protect customers, staff, and operations.
— VIA Rail for its Safety from the Get-Go campaign, which used the perspective of employees’ children to emphasize the importance of safety.
e-bike strategy very important. After the very serious airplane incident where a charging pack caught fire these battery pack products are always a danger. However, who is responsible for banning non-compliant bikes? Who certifies the bikes and what are their credentials?
Then what if a certified e-bike gets immersed unknowing in water and the water leaks into the battery compartment? Of course that applies to any product.
