PORT CLINTON, Pa. — The Reading & Northern Railroad has announced plans for its 2024 main line excursion schedule, which will begin Saturday, April 6, and has placed tckets for the schedule on sale.

Regular-season excursions from Reading Outer Station in Reading, Pa., and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Regional Station in Pittston, Pa., will operate on weekends through Sunday, Sept. 29. After a break for fall foliage trains, they will resume Nov. 9 and continue through Dec. 29. Tickets are available here, or by calling 610-562-2102.

Trains from Reading use the railroad’s Budd Rail Diesel Cars. They depart at 9 a.m., and also board at Port Clinton and Tamaqua. Round-trip tickets are $39 per person from Reading or Port Clinton and $24 per person from Tamaqua; concessions are available on board for cash purchase. “We pride ourselves on offering these family-friendly train excursions for most of the year to allow tourists and locals alike to experience the natural beauty and history of this region,” Josh Cascarella, director of passenger operations at Outer Station, said in a press release. “Taking the train is a great way to avoid the traffic and parking congestion in the Jim Thorpe area.”

Service from Pittston originated in 2023. Those trains consists of diesel locomotives, two Crown Class coach cars, and a dining car offering refreshments for cash purchase, and depart at 8:45 a.m. Tickets are $39 from Pittston, $36 from Penobscot, and $29 from White Haven. “We are still astounded by the great success of our first season of passenger trains departing from Pittston,” said Tim Wright, director of passenger operations at Pittston. “We are excited to see what 2024 brings as we continue to embrace the deep railroad history of the Wyoming Valley and our commitment to the local community.”

Details on the fall foliage trains, to begin in October and run through the first weekend in November, will be announced at a later date.
