KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — Regional Rail LLC, a holding company with 10 U.S. short lines and other rail-related companies, has announced it will expand into Canada with acquisition of the Great Sandhills Railway, along with interests in three other freight rail assets in western Canada. The new companies, acquired from grain firm 3G Canada Limited, serve customers in agricultural and energy markets.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the employees of Great Sandhills Railway to our team and working together with our new partners to execute our top-line growth strategy,” Regional Rail CEO Al Sauer said in a press release.
Great Sandhills Railway, headquartered in Leader, Saskatchewan, operates 123 miles (198 kilometers) of track in Saskatchewan and Alberta. It was established in 2009 and operates on a former Canadian Pacific subdivision.
“We appreciate the support G3 Canada has provided over the past several years and are excited to join the Regional Rail family of shortline railroads,” Great Sandhills CEO Perry Pellerin said. “The GSR shares Regional Rail’s focus on providing a high degree of customer service to our partners and we look forward to sharing best practices between our companies to help further grow our operations in Canada.”
Regional Rail has more than doubled in size since gaining the backing of international infrastructure investment manager 3i Group in 2019.
