DURANGO, Colo. — Trips to Silverton, Colo., on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad could be disrupted until at least Wednesday, June 26, after a rock slide was discovered Saturday morning, the Durango Herald reports.
The slide, near Milepost 486 north of Needleton, was reported at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. It occurred sometime after the last train returning from Silveron passed on Friday about 4 p.m. Trips to Silverton were cancelled today (Sunday, June 23) and Monday and the railroad’s general manager, Jeff Johnson, told the Herald this afternoon that the track was unlikely to be reopened on Tuesday, given the amount of debris to be cleared from the remote location, and the need to assess the track for damage once the slide is cleared. Track repairs are likely to take another day or longer.
In the interim, trains are operating between Durango and Cascade Canyon. The railroad has been contacting passengers with reservations to give them an option of the shorter trip or a refund. On Saturday, most opted to keep their reservations and go to Cascade Canyon, Johnson told the Herald.
