Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority logoSAN JOSE, Calif. — Valley Transportation Authority light rail service remains suspended indefinitely as a result of the May 26 mass shooting at the VTA maintenance yard, and the substitute bus service which had been operating since the event is being discontinued. The agency reports the bus service is ending because of limited staffing.

“Instead, VTA is directing all resources to the regular bus network that serves the majority of our riders who rely on public transit the most,” the agency said in a Monday news release. “Limited operator availability means that service will be less frequent even for bus service.  We apologize for the inconvenience, and ask for your patience and understanding while we work to navigate this unprecedented circumstance.”

Meanwhile, investigators have determined the fire at the home of shooter was left by a pot of ammunition left slow cooking on the stove in a kitchen sprayed with accelerants. KPIX-TV reports the fire was extinguished before reaching a cache of weapons, ammunition, and Molotov cocktails that, if ignited, could have caused a significant explosion causing widespread damage in the neighborhood.

Authorities continue to try to determine the motive for the shooting that killed nine victims and the fire at the home of gunman Samuel Cassidy, who authorities say killed himself at the shooting scene.

  1. This shutdown says that the light rail service isn’t necessary. A 1 day shutdown may have been needed. The rest should be investigated.

    1. It’s still a crime scene. The FBI and other agencies are still investigating. And the shutdown is inconveniencing a lot of people.
