CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Seven people were taken to hospitals for treatment following the derailment of a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Green Line train this evening (Oct. 1) near the Lechmere station in Cambridge, WBTS-TV reports.

The incident occurred about 5 p.m. About 50 people were reported to have evacuated from the light rail vehicle onto the tracks. Injuries for those transported for treatment were not life-threatening, the Cambridge Fire Department said in a post on social media site X.

In an evening press conference at Lechmere station, MBTA Chief Operating Officer Ryan Coholan said the agency has ruled out an issue with the track and is focusing on human error as a cause of the derailment. The agency said in a statement that it “sincerely apologizes to riders for the frustration and distress this incident has caused. We will thoroughly investigate this  matter to ensure this does not happen again.”

Shuttle buses have replaced rail operations between North Station and Medford/Tufts on the Green Line, the MBTA said on X. Crews are on scene to investigate and rerail the train.
