TUCSON, Ariz. — The shooter in the incident aboard the Sunset Limited that killed a Drug Enforcement Administration agent and injured two other law officers has been identified.

The Arizona Republic reports the Pima County Medical Office has identified the man as Darrion Taylor, 26. Taylor, who exchanged gunfire with officers while the train was stopped in Tucson, and then barricaded himself in a bathroom, died of gunshot wounds “of the trunk and extremities” that were not self-inflicted, according to a statement from Medical Examiner Dr. Gregory Hess. A more detailed report is expected in November.

DEA agent Michael Garbo was killed when Taylor opened fire as agents were detaining 22-year-old Devonte Mathis after finding marijuana and other cannabis products in his backpack, according to a court filing earlier this week [see “Man killed in shooting on Sunset Limited was 16-year-DEA agent,” Trains News Wire, Oct. 6, 2021]. A funeral for Garbo is scheduled for today.

  1. So the question remains, why? Did he anticipate also being detained by the law? There must be some reason he did it.
