SMART-TD reaches tentative agreement with Caltrain operator

SAN JOSE, Calif. — SMART-TD has reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year contract with TransitAmerica Services Inc., contract operator for Caltrain commuter service, the union announced Tuesday (April 8, 2025).

The union, the International Asssociation of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers-Transportation Division, represents 150 conductors and assistant conductor.

The contract, retroactive to July 1, 2022, includes three years of 5% wage increases and two years of 4.5% increases, compounding to a total increase of 26.4% over the life of the agreement. Other aspects of the agreement include modification of bereavement leave to include additional family members and a modest increase in health and welfare premiums, the union said.

The agreement is subject to ratification. Voting will be conducted electronically; dates for the vote were not announced.
