Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit logoPETALUMA, Calif. — The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit Board has approved funding to build a second station in the city of Petaluma, which has been part of the plan for the rail service since its initial planning.

The Marin Independent Journal reports the board on Wednesday voted to budget $14 million for the Petaluma North station, to be located near the intersection of Corona Road and North McDowell Boulevard, about 3 miles northwest of the existing downtown Petaluma station.

Construction will begin in summer 2023 and the station could open in fall 2024, the agency estimates.

The station funds include $10 million from grant from the California State Transportation Agency. The City of Petaluma and Sonoma County Transportation Authority are each expected to contribute $2 million.
