PORTER, Ind. — Work to double track the South Shore Line through Michigan City, Ind., should be completed by Thanksgiving, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District officials told the district’s board of trustees at a Monday meeting.
The Times of Northwest Indiana reports that overall, the double-track work between Gary, Ind., and Michigan City is more than one-third complete, while about 10% of the work is done on the West Lake Corridor project, which is building a new 8-mile-long South Shore spur line to Dyer, Ind.
The board also approved purchases of $4.6 million for 20 auxiliary power supply units for its bilevel rail cars; $1.5 million to upgrade central processing units needed on railcars for positive train control; and $440,000 on 60 Wabtec air dryers for railcar braking systems.
Not looking forward to the Dyer extension. It’s going to make for nightmarish traffic in the area.
Or it would reduce traffic because less cars are on the road since more people are on the train?
The current ROW for the Dyer Extension is at ground level. Construction will most definitely tie up east-west traffic between Hammond and Dyer.
