Tickets go on sale next week for the trips, expected to be the last on a Norfolk Southern main line for 2013. They’re part of Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam program.
The locomotive will make round trip excursions from Chattanooga to Oneida on Nov. 10, and from Knoxville to Asheville, N.C., on Nov. 16 and 17. The route to Oneida is on the scenic and legendary line once known as the Rat Hole for its many tunnels, while the line to Asheville takes the train through the scenic and remote French Broad River gorge.
The excursions are in addition to the previously announced Nov. 9 trip to Attalla, Ala.
Meanwhile, TVRM is working on famous Southern Railway 2-8-2 No. 4501 for use on excursions in 2014, and last week workers began loading tubes in the 1911 Baldwin Mikado. Check the December 2013 issue of Trains magazine for an update about the work.
