SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The community of Spokane Valley has gained the last of the funding it needs for a $38 million grade crossing project with the announcement the Washington State Department of Transportation will contribute $5 million toward an underpass for Pines Road at its intersection with the BNSF main line.
The Spokane Spokesman-Review reports this funding joins $22.7 million in federal grants [see “More than 30-rail related projects …,” Trains News Wire, Aug. 11, 2022] and $10.2 million from the Spokane Regional Transportation Council for the project, which eliminate a grade crossing at a site with more than 60 trains a day. It also will create a new access point for the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River and a roundabout at the intersection of Pines Road and Trent Avenue.
Funding for the project took more than five years to obtain.
