SAN JOSE — The state of California will provide $46 million in funding for a 2.4-mile extension of a San Jose light rail line, a $350 million project that includes an elevated right-of-way and a new station between the current end of track and an existing transit center served by buses.
The San Jose Mercury News reports the extension of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency Orange Line will extend from the existing Alum Rock station to a station at the Eastridge Transit Center, with a new station at Story Road. The route is currently served by buses that take about 11 minutes; light rail service will cut that to about 4½ minutes.
The state funding will come from the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program. It will allow groundbreaking to occur next year, with service expected to begin in 2029. Most of the project is being funded through ballot measures passed in 2000 and 2018.
