AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — Tracks have been cleared and rail service can resume through the site of a CSX Transportation derailment that occurred west of Schenectady, N.Y., on Friday morning, a railroad representative told the Daily Gazette newspaper this afternoon (Monday, Aug. 7).
Thirteen cars of a 157-car CSX train en route from Selkirk, N.Y. to Buffalo derailed shortly before 8 a.m. Friday [see “CSX derailment halts Amtrak service …,” Trains News Wire, Aug. 4, 2023].
A CSX statement to the newspaper said “recovery efforts will continue until the site is fully restored” and that the cause of the derailment remains under investigation. No hazardous materials were involved, although some derailed tank cars contained propane residue.
Empire Service and Maple Leaf trains remained suspended between Albany and Buffalo on Monday, with an Amtrak representative telling the Gazette “full service will be restored as soon as conditions improve and it is safe to do so.”
Which is what is done at every derailment.
CSX crews worked throughout the weekend to clear the derailed train cars, clean up materials from the site and restore the tracks. Heavy machinery used at the incident area.
