WASHINGTON — Rail traffic’s general downward trend continued in the latest weekly statistics from the Association of American Railroads.
For the week ending June 11, U.S. railroads reported 510,295 carloads and intermodal units, a 3.6% decline from the corresponding week in 2021. That included 234,942 carloads, down 2.8%, and 275,353 containers and trailers, down 4.4%.
Year-to-date totals, through 23 weeks of 2022, are level with 2021 for carloads, down 6.4% for intermodal traffic, and down 3.5% for combined carload and intermodal traffic. The weekly average to date is 494,686 carloads and intermodal units.
North American totals, for 12 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, have overall traffic for the week at 695,382 carloads and intermodal units, down 3.3%; 332,226 carloads, a decline of 2.5%; and 363,156 intermodal units, off 4.1% from the same week in 2021. Year-to-date North American volume is down 3.7% from the 23-week totals for 2021.
