
WASHINGTON — U.S. weekly rail traffic remained above 2024 levels for the week ending March 8, 2025, the Association of American Railroads reports.
According to AAR information, traffic for the week was 497,412 carloads and intermodal units, a 5.4% gain over the same week a year ago. The overall figure included 219,457 carloads, up 2.6%, and 277,955 containers and trailers, an increase of 7.7%.
Through 10 weeks of 2025, carload volume is down 1.5% from the same point last year, while intermodal traffic is up 8.4%. The combined volume, 4,803,024 carloads and intermodal units, represents a 3.8% increase compared to the first 10 weeks of 2024.
North American traffic, from nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, included 326,395 carloads, up 2% from the same week a year ago, and 359,817 intermodal units, an increase of 5.5%. The combined traffic, 686,212 carloads and intermodal units, is an increase of 3.8% from the corresponding week in 2024.
For the year to date, the North American volume of 6,574,589 carloads and intermodal units is an increase of 2.3% over the first 10 weeks of 2024. That includes a 0.6% decrease in Canada and an 8.6% decline in Mexico.
