Logo of Canadian union UniforMONTREAL — Canadian Pacific mechanical workers represented by Canadian union Unifor have ratified a two-year contract with CP, the union announced Thursday.

The agreement, which runs through Dec. 31, 2024, covers approximately 1,200 workers who maintain and inspect locomotives and freight cars, and produce components for rolling stock and track. The union said the agreement “includes gains to group benefit maximums, enhancements to job security allowances, and significant increases to shift premiums.” It did not offer details on the ratification vote.

“From the onset, the company demanded significant concessions from the union,” Rick Raso, president of Unifor Local 101, said in a press release. “While successfully fighting back concessions we are also able to secure the doubling of the shift premium. This is a significant victory. This type of increase has not occurred in decades.”

The union represents CP workers at 18 locations across Canada.

The railroad and union had announced a tentative agreement in mid-January, after their previous contract expired Dec. 31 [see “CP, Canadian mechanical workers reach contract agreement,” Trains News Wire, Jan. 13, 2023].
