Union Pacific and CSX Transportation have notified customers to expect shipment delays as a result of the recent storms that swept across much of the country, with CSX indicating those delays could last through the New Year’s weekend.
In a Tuesday, Dec. 27, customer advisory on its website, Union Pacific says parts of northern Iowa and central Minnesota “are still seeing wind gusts, sub-zero temperatures, and snow drifts that are approximately 15 feet high. Our Engineering and Operating teams made significant opening our main lines in the impacted areas.
“Customers should continue to anticipate extended delays on shipments in the affected areas until conditions improve and severe weather recovery efforts are complete.”
CSX, meanwhile, says in its own Dec. 27 advisory that it is continuing service recovery operations in areas “including Buffalo, Erie, and other locations in the Great Lakes region and Northeast. Shipment delays are possible as service restoration activity continues throughout the week and into the upcoming holiday weekend.”
The recent storm dumped more than 50 inches of snow at Buffalo’s airport, CBS News reports, and is responsible for at least 31 deaths in the area and 60 nationwide.
Maybe we need a better snow removal technique, maybe a solar powered solution like sunshine☺
Years ago a friend was on a job clearing Bison Yard using big loaders and dump trucks. I don’t know where the dump trucks took the snow.
I checked: the NY State Thruway spur Buffalo to Niagara Falls is closed; otherwise road is open from PA to NY City. (Wed 12-28; 7.20 PM EST)
The New York Central had a snow blower in Buffalo with jet engines. X29493 .
The engines came from a B-36 via the M497 experiment.
Bring out the Rotaries! UP still keeps a couple in Roseville for when the Sierra Nevada snow pack is so deep that there is no more room next to the track to put it!
How many snow plows were disposed of for these routes in the past ? Know it is hard for non road experienced management to keep equipment that may only be needed once in 5 – 10 years. Jordon spreaders will not work with this amount of snow.
