Union Pacific rebuilding ‘Spine Line’ in Iowa NEWSWIRE

MASON CITY, Iowa. – Union Pacific is spending $31.5 million to upgrade the former Rock Island “Spine Line” between Nevada and Mason City. The project began April 24 and is scheduled for completion in mid-July.

The railroad will replace more than 57 miles of rail, repair the surfaces at 67 crossings, and replace 16 switches.

UP plans to spend more than $109 million in 2015 to improve its Iowa lines. The railroad will spend $105 million to maintain track, $1.5 million to on signal systems and $2.8 million to maintain or replace bridges in the state.

Union Pacific plans to spend $4.2 billion across its network this year for capital improvements.

  1. On my way home from Arkansas, traving along highway 30 between
    State Center and Marshalltown Iowa I seen a westbound intermodal atleast a mile long two engines in front and a pusher in back, so cool to see it

  2. How I love to see prosperity on The Rock! It is probably already in much better shape than it was in then.

  3. 57 miles of rail sounds like a lot until you divide that number by half to get track miles which is only 28.5 miles of railroad. Still a lot of rail. I wonder what size the UP is going to use as replacement rail and if it's new or relay. Price differential is the main difference.
