CARLISLE, Iowa — Cleanup continued through the weekend after one locomotive and about 20 cars of a Union Pacific train derailed Friday night near the town of Carlisle, just southeast of Des Moines.
KCCI-TV reports the accident, which temporarily closed the adjacent State Route 5, initially launched a hazmat response from local fire departments, but no hazardous materials were determined to be involved. Most of the cargo spilled was lumber and dry goods.
No injuries were reported. The line is expected to reopen early this week.
I live in central Iowa. The late local news tonight (Monday) showed a train passing through, obviously on a slow order, with some of the derailed and wrecked cars in the ditch between the highway and the railroad. One of the things spilled was corn syrup, and with the temperature forecast to be below freezing tonight, that’s going to be fun to clean up. Hoo boy.
