BILL, Wyo. — Twenty-one cars of a Union Pacific coal train derailed today (July 10), blocking UP’s route to ship coal out of the Powder River Basin.
Cowboy State Daily reports the derailment occurred about 6:30 a.m. approximately 4 miles southeast of Lusk, Wyo., which is 130 miles north of Cheyenne. No injuries were reported.
James Santistevan, Niobrara County Emergency Coordinator, told the news site that the spilled coal did no harm to any waterways.
A Union Pacific representative told Wyoming Public Radio that the cause was under investigation, and that the railroad did not have an estimate when the line would reopen.
This being multi track territory are all lines blocked?
Does this trackage also serve the BNSF coal trains?
“ Cowboy State Daily reports the derailment occurred about 6:30 a.m. near Bill, which is about 4 miles from Lusk, Wyo., and about 110 miles north of Cheyenne.”
Again, just another example of TRAINS cutting and pasting an article without fact-checking! Bill and Lusk are really about 93 miles apart.
Could the heavy torrential rains that have recently hit the area be the cause of the derailment in question?

The last derailment in this area was in 2016.

Temporarily closing some railroad lines going to the Powder River Basin, the top producing coal area in the nation.

Just another narrow escape!

I’ll bet the UP knows the cause already.
