UP intermodal train derails in eastern Oregon

Union Pacific logo without slogan. UP Bailey Yard explosion appear to be accidental.LA GRANDE, Ore. — Eleven single-stack container cars of a Union Pacific train derailed west of La Grande on Thursday evening, Feb. 27, Union County Emergency Services reports.

The derailment occurred about 9 p.m. No injuries were reported and Union Pacific confirmed no hazardous materials were involved. Two grade crossings — at Fire and Greenwood streets — were expected to be blocked for some time while UP conducts an investigation.

La Grande is approximately 290 rail miles east of Portland, Ore., and is at the eastern end of UP’s La Grande Subdivision and western end of the railroad’s Huntington Sub.

  1. Is it possible that some UP initiated train handling rules are causing these problems? Intermodal makeups should not be a problem.

  2. Lets see what the scorecard is thus far….

    – Coal drag in Montana
    – A double stack container run in Arizona
    – A group of single stacks in Oregon

    Any Nike’s on these loads? Any large screen TV’s from China?

    How about taillights for Ford F-150’s?
